the music of
Cameron Cartio
Another talented star
to be added to our list is by far Cameron Cartio. Born
in Tehran, he moved
when he was only in second grade, to
Barcelona and then Malmo with his family. A confessed
lover of music from an early age,
Cameron got his first chance to play with different
instruments
in school, where he was hooked onto the piano immediately.
Later, he formed several different bands with other Persian
and
Swedish
friends. It was then that he began writing music, producing
and doing some remixing as well.
Still a native of Sweden,
this young and handsome singer and artist wrote
his breakthough song "Roma" in 2004. He also competed in
the Eurovision contest, where he made it through to the
second round and came in number 5. Here we have a chance
to talk to this emerging artist and passionate musician:
PersianMirror: Tell
us about yourself. Cameron
Cartio: I
was born in Tehran and spent the first 7 years of my life
there before my parents decided
to move to Spain. After a year, we moved to Sweden and
that’s where I’ve spent the majority of my
life, almost 19 years.
We lived in southern Sweden, in a city called Malmo.
I
live in Stockholm right now and the choice to live
here is simply because this city is the capital of art
and
entertainment on all levels in Sweden. I wanted to
be close to the core of the Swedish music world.
"I’m
Proud to be Iranian." Cameron
PM: Your
last name doesn’t sound Persian. Is it a stage
name?
CC: Yes
it is. Cartio is an artistic name which my older brother
and famous music video director in Los Angeles, Alexander
Cartio created 8 years ago because he didn’t want
to have any limits or restrictions in his/our artistic
careers due to names. He wanted a name which could carry
the art all the way to the top on a global level.
PM: Who
were some of the biggest influence of your interpretation
of the music? CC: 80’s
music style has always had a warm place in my heart, but
I love all kinds of music, anything which is composed well
and has great tunes. Modern talking, Jean Michel Jarre
and
other 80’s icons are some of my favorites.
PM:
Your sounds have such a hip and modern feel to them.
You have lived all over the world. Where do you feel
you belong
the most and what do you consider yourself?
CC: I
am and will always be Iranian. I’m Proud to be
Iranian and will always love and cherish my native country.
I feel like I belong to Sweden because I’ve lived
there for many years. The country has given me many great
opportunities as far as education and occupation go.
PM: What are some
of the upcoming projects or events that you have planned
in the near future?
CC: At
the moment "Roma" is being launched in different parts
of the world, including the Middle East. I’m also
collaborating on my second single together with one of
the most famous
Arab singers in the world, Cheb Khaled which I’m
really proud and excited about.
My debut album, which
will come out soon will be very different and exciting.
I promise
a lot of good surprises. I also want to thank and send
my love to all the people who supported me during the
Swedish Eurovision finals. I am in deep gratitude to all
of them.
PM:
Desert Island. Three things. What will you take?
CC: Water,
Food and a working cell phone.
