> > TOWARDS MODERN PERSIAN ARCHITECTURE BY YVES GHIAI
Inspiration Is Different Than Copying

There is a difference between a Persian inspired Architecture and simply copying persian motifs on a western style building. Inspiration draws the essence of a culture and translates that essence (Mayeh) into Architectural Elements.

There are main elements in Persian Architecture which can readily be transcribed onto comtemporary structures.

1) The use of Courtyards

2) The use of Columns with reflective pools (Tchahar Sotoon)

3) The use of Stylised motifs using only abstracted forms of ancient patterns

4) The use of Light and its reflections throughout space

5) Inspiration from Persian Poetry especially Mowlavi and Hafez who described space and light in grand fashion.

An example of that process can be viewed at www.ghiai.com under 'Projects/Luxury Mansions?Chateau Golestan'.

As my late Father 'Heydar Ghiai' use to tell his Architecture students at the University of Teheran: 'Look not for the Gold, but for the magic wand that turns all into Gold'.

May these words inspire Iranian Architects all over.
