> > BEHROOZINIA: DREAMING WITH A BARBAT BY MILAD MOLAVI

Hossein Behroozinia was born in Tehran. At the early age of nine he was accepted into Tehran's Conservatory of Music. Later, as a young man of seventeen, he was asked to instruct at the prestigious Centre of Preservation and Propagation of Music, where he flourished

Behroozinia has learned Tar, under the supervision of Reza Vohdaney, and the Oud under the guidance of Mansour Nariman, and then he advanced his cultivation by being introduced to the Persian radif (repertoire) of Mirza Abdullah by the famed Mohammad Reza Lotfi.

Countless distinguished members of the global Persian cultural society regard Behroozinia as a leading figure in the preservation of Iran’s traditional music. Consequentially in 2003 the Ministry of Culture decorated Hossein Behroozinia with its highest honor, the “First Order of Arts”.

Hossein has collaborated with many of the eminent voices of our legacy, the likes of Parisa, Sima Bina, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Shahram Nazeri, Iraj Bastami and Ali-Reza Eftekhari.

Behroozinia has traveled intensely throughout Europe, Asia, and North America performing numerous sold out concerts before an international audience with various prominent music ensembles including the artistic Ensemble Aref and the brilliant Ensemble Mowlana. The L.A. Times describes Behroozinia's work as 'spectacular musicianship'.

Hossein Behroozinia made currently lives in Vancouver, where he remains dedicated to the perpetuation of Iran’s musical heritage.

Hossein wishes to perform in his most favorite place of performance, Iran. He hopes that one day Iranian classical music becomes well known around the world, and Barbat, his own instrument becomes more popular.

In a friendly Interview Hossein talked with me about his personal and professional life.

PM:  Who is Hossein Behroozinia?

Hossien Behroozinia: A Persian Musician, Barbat(Oud) player.

PM: Where do you live now, and why you are there?

HB: I currently live in Vancouver, Canada. Because I believe Vancouver is the best and most comfortable city in the world.

PM: Tell us a little about how you got started with music?

HB: I started music at the age of nine at The Conservatory of Tehran. It was because my older sister was receiving education at the same school. I learned how to play Tar, Tombak, Setar, and Daf. My main instrument however, is Barbat, and I am the first person who graduated from The Conservatory of Iran.

PM: What was your motivation to music?

HB: My sister, as I mentioned before, was studying music. She was my motivation, also most importantly, I loved to be a musician. My first professional performance was at Roodaky stage, at the age of 16.

PM: Who are your favorite hero in music, and who has biggest influence on you?

HB: There are currently no hero's for me in Persian music, but my influence was; Mr. Mohammad Reza Lotfi, who influenced me quite a bit. I should also announce a teacher of mine, Mr.Nariman who taught me how to play the Oud for about four years.

PM: What are some of the upcoming projects or events that you have planned in the near future?

HB: I'm currently releasing my new CD, as well as my new study book of Barbat for beginners.

PM:  Where is your favorite place to perform and why?

HB: Iran is my most favorite place of performance, since Persian music was created there, and also, more people appreciate this kind of music in Iran.

PM: What is the sweetest memory of your life?

HB: To be honest, it must have been when my children were born.

PM: What is the bitter memory of your life?

HB: It would most definitely be, when my parents passed-away, around sixteen years ago.

PM:  Dessert Island, three things, what do you take?

HB:

-Plenty of water, so I can enjoy the warm sun, without dehydration. -Plenty of Food, so my body will stay alive. -My instrument, so my soul will stay alive.

PM: What is your message to our Readers?

HB: I just wish for all of the readers to appreciate and support the arts and cultures of Iranians.

PM: We appreciate your taking the time to do this interview with PersianMirror.

HB: Thank you
