LOS ANGELES, CA—November 29, 2007-- Relief International (RI), in association with Participant Productions, have joined together for the forthcoming release of The Kite Runner, to further literacy in Afghanistan and Pakistan. On Sunday, December 2, 2007, at UCLA’s James Bridges Theatre in Los Angeles, Relief International invites the public to a special pre-release screening of the film based on Khaled Hosseini’s acclaimed novel. The event aims to inspire audiences to take action and support the development of libraries in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
RI’s Libraries Program creates community-based libraries that enhance literacy, learning and life skills. In Afghanistan, those who can read and write (a mere 28% of the total population), often lack books needed to develop their skills and deepen their knowledge. To date, RI has established 350 libraries throughout Afghanistan. In Pakistan, only 1.8% of rural schools and 9.8% of urban schools have a collection of books. The program, aims to create a network of rural and provincial school-based community libraries throughout the country.
