> > PERSEPOLIS AT FRENCH CÉSARS AWARDS? BY DARIUS KADIVAR
120 nominated runner ups for French Oscar to be announced January 25th

The Name of the 120 nominated runner ups for the French Oscars® known as Les Césars will be definitively announced on January 25th at the Famous Restaurants on the Champs Elysée Le Fouquet’s. The French Academy of Arts and Sciences aka L'Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma will receive all nominees at a dinner on February 13th 2008. The 33rd ceremony of the Césars will be held on February 23rd at the Théatre Du Châtelet and will be aired live by the French Cable Channel Canal Plus.

The César Award was first given out in 1975. The nominations are selected by the members of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinema. The name of the award comes from the sculptor César Baldaccini (1921-1998). The trophies are actual sculptures of the artist.

The prestigious Award is delivered similarly as the American Oscars® during a glittering event. The nominees and final awardees are selected after a two successive votes by all members of the Academy who are basically all professionals of the industry and in respect to the Academy’s regulations. The result is supervised by a legal officer.

Even if the list of nominees is yet to be known, it is quite obvious that Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud’s Summer blockbuster movie Persepolis (which was to receive the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and which will be representing France at the upcoming American Oscar’s ® in Best Foreign Film Category) will certainly be in this list.

However like all such important events no one can say with certainty who will win in a given category since the Ceremony has in the past offered Big Surprises. Nevertheless Persepolis’ success has also shed light on its actors some of whom are Great film Legends like Danielle Darrieux ( in the role of Satrapi’s Grandma) and Catherine Deneuve and daughter Chiara Mastroianni in the respective roles of Satrapi’s mother and the rebellious Marjane. It should also be noted that Danielle Darrieux and Chiara Mastroianni have shared the screen in two subsequent movies this year: As voices in Persepolis as well as full actors in a remake of an Agatha Christie movie entitles L’Heure Zéro.

The ultimate choice of the Academy will have no influence on that of the American Academy that will be hosting its 80th ceremony next February since both Academy’s are independent and that votes are as required by both Academy’s SECRET.

However given the close dates of both Ceremonies, the 23rd for Les César®s and 24th for the Oscars®the entire Cast and crew of Persepolis may well be geographically divided during the Ceremonies in order to assist to both events.

In any case we surely Wish the fabulous Cast and Crew GOOD LUCK !

So Stay Tuned.

VIVE LE CINEMA & VIVE PERSEPOLIS ! ;0)
