> > MARY APICK’S WORLD TOUR OF “BENEATH THE VEIL” BY SHABNAM REZAEI
Successful Play About Iran Travels

The legendary actress Mary Apick has had a tremendous amount of success with her controversial and provocative play “Beneath The Veil”. Critically acclaimed already in cities like Los Angeles and Washington DC, the play has gained a lot of momentum among Iranians and non-Iranians alike. Mary is now planning on taking the piece worldwide, with an amazing tour that spans through the end of 2007.

An award winning actress and activist, Mary Apick had early success in her career in shows like “Octopus,” a long running “Saturday Night Live” type show on Iranian television.  Mary went on to act in television, film and plays, becoming one of the most popular stars in Iran.  She was the first Iranian actress to receive the Moscow Film Festival Best Actress Award for “Dead End.”

She left Iran due to the revolution and started a new life in the United States, where she has since starred in several American productions, including the critically acclaimed “The Mission” and “Checkpoint.”  She also played featured roles in productions such as the NBC miniseries “On Wings of Eagles,” and produced the MGM release, “Mind Games.” While working with partner, Bob Yari, prolific filmmaker and a producer of the Academy Award winning film “Crash,” Mary expanded her involvement in quality and socially significant projects, one of which has been “Beneath The Veil”.

Mary’s mother Apick Youssefian (pictured here with Mary) is also a pioneer actress and producer in the field of theater, television, and cinema in Iran. She was the first woman television producer in the history of television for theater. “My mom is the reason I am in this field. I started as a child actress in her popular show “Amir Arsalan”, in which she had the starring role along side Parviz Sayyad. She is quite the lady, “ Mary says of her mom.

“Beneath The Veil” premieres on September 23rd, 2007, at the Betts Marvin Theatre in San Francisco. The play is then taken to various cities across the US and Canada as listed below. For detailed information, refer to the PersianMirror Events page.

About Beneath the Veil

Critically acclaimed in Los Angeles where it premiered, “Beneath the Veil” is the brainchild of award-winning actress and activist Mary Apick, a popular child star and performer in her native Iran who was forced to flee the country after the Iranian Revolution. Since then, she has enjoyed a successful acting career in the United States, tackling politically charged projects such as “Beneath the Veil,” which caught the attention of critics at the seventh annual Los Angeles Theater Festival in 2005
with Diane Baker
