Sepahan FC make their first ever appearance in an Asian Champions League (ACL) quarter final on September 19th when they take on Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale. The first leg of this tie is played at home in Esfahan with the return leg to follow a week later on September 26th. Sepahan defied the odds by winning Group D in the first round beating Saudi rivals Al Shabab at home and away, a magnificent achievement for the Persian side.
Sepahan earned 13 points from their group stage matches however Kawasaki did even better scoring 16 points with 5 wins and one draw to win Group F. Sepahan are the Hazfi Cup specialists in Iran and have qualified for 2007/08 ACL by overcoming Persepolis in Hazfi Cup final last season, but first they have unfinished business in 2006/07 campaign starting on September 19th.
Sepahan have made a good start in the Persian Gulf League (PGL) in Iran this season winning three and drawing one of their matches to date and are currently second in the league table behind Persepolis FC. Sepahan have so far scored 8 goals and conceded 4 in PGL, it should be noted that 6 of Sepahan’s 8 goals have been scored by Mahmood Karimi, he is the top scorer so far this season and he could not have got his scoring touch right at a better time, Kawasaki will be keeping a close eye on Mahmood Karimi.
