Aravane Rezai beat Argentine qualifier Jorgelina Cravero in an exciting match on the first day of the US Open. The final score was a satisfying 6-3, 7-5. Aravane breezed through the first set getting ahead early in the game.
In the second set, it looked like she had stolen the match getting ahead 3-1 but then Jorgelina fought back to secure an advantage. Through some strong serving and consistent returns, Aravane managed to climb back and even out the score. The French-Iranian eventually beat out the first-time US Open contender in that same set.
Aravane has a tough second round ahead of her, having to go up against Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Ivanovic, the number 5 seed beat Japan’s Aiko Nikamura in an easy match 6-1, 6-1. This is where Aravane’s tenacity and persistence need to really kick in. She has the strength to win this game, but she needs to stay focused and consistent.
