> > ARAVANE REZAI REACHES FINALS IN ISTANBUL CUP 2007 BY SHABNAM REZAEI
The French-Iranian Beats Sharapova to Push Through

Aravane Rezai, our favorite rising tennis star has had a great week at the Istanbul Cup 2007 WTA. In the first round of the Turkish tournament, Aravane beat Tzipora Obziler 6-3, 6-1 in an easy match.

On Wednesday, the 20-year old Iranian-French caused a major upset by ousting former Wimbledon and US Open champion Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. While Rezai suffered a minor injury during this match and decided to take a medical timeout, she came back strong and aggressive as ever. Venus, who made some vital unforced errors, could not hold up against the offensive.

In the quarterfinals, Aravane faced American Meghann Shaughnessy. Her winning streak continued and she was able to secure a win with 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Today, in the semi-finals, Aravane beat top seed Maria Sharapova 2-6, 4-6. This means Aravane will advance to the final games to face off with Elena Dementieva in tomorrow’s final rounds.

This will be an important win for Aravane and a chance for the young tennis star to take her game to the next level. In last year’s US Open, Aravane reached the fourth round only to be beat by Dementieva. This time, Aravane has a great opportunity to win the Istanbul 2007 title. Her performance over the week has been incredible. She has been playing with focus and confidence and just needs to do more of the same.

Encore une fois Aravane et bonne chance!
