> > KIAROSTAMI, QARIB, AYYARI,FARHADI AWARDED AT FIRST IRANIAN FILMMAKER'S CELEBRATION BY DARIUS KADIVAR

Tribute was paid to four Iranian directors in the First Iranian Filmmaker's Celebration held Sunday at Tehran's Enqelab Sports Complex. Veteran filmmakers Shapur Qarib, Abbas Kiarostami, Kianush Ayyari, and Asghar Farhadi were the four directors selected to receive honors.

Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Mohammadreza Jafari-Jelveh, Farabi Cinematic Foundation director Alireza Rezadad, the President's advisor in artistic affairs Javad Shamaqdari, and a group of prominent filmmakers and actors were among the participants at the ceremony.

Shapur Qarib, on receiving his prize, expressed his gratitude to the audience, saying, 'I thought I had been forgotten over the past 27 years, but now I am happy to know that you were thinking of me. I hope that you will help me to make my last film, which will be a film for children.'

The second director to be honored at the ceremony was Abbas Kiarostami.

Director Ebrahim Foruzesh, who had been chosen to present Kiarostami with a prize, said, 'It is hard to talk about a filmmaker who has already been praised by world famous directors.'

'Kiarostami, in his works, has a philosophical point of view towards mankind. He looks at man differently and avoids adventure,' he noted.

Kiarostami expressed his happiness at being amongst Iranian filmmakers and said, 'I was a bit gloomy when I entered the place, but on seeing so many familiar faces, the feeling faded away. I am very pleased that you have excused my long absence and that you have not forgotten me.'

Kianush Ayyari was the third to receive his prize.

Director Kiumars Purahmad, who handed Ayyari the prize, told the audience that it was a pity that Ayyari had not made a cinema film for many years.

However, Ayyari announced that he has been busy for some years working on the TV series 'Qarib's Life', which has kept him at a distance from the world of cinema.

Director Kamal Tabrizi handed the prize to Farhadi, saying, 'Farhadi is a director whose social-themed films are liked both in Iran and all over the world. He is not only a good filmmaker, but also a good writer.'

Farhadi remarked, 'It is very hard to accept a prize when so many who are present deserve to receive it.'

The director of the Iranian Filmmakers Guild, Alireza Raisian was also praised for his effort and contribution to the guild.

The celebration was co-sponsored by Iran's House of Cinema, Farabi Cinematic Foundation, and the Arts Department of Tehran Municipality.
