> > NOROOZ AT THE MET GALA 2007 BY SHABNAM REZAEI
A Who's Who of the Persian Community

This year, for the first time, a prestigious and delightful evening of celebration was hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to mark Norooz. The event, which was held on March 21st in the majestic Temple of Dendur was called 'Noruz At the Met'.

The event started with a cocktail reception in the Great Hall, where a beautiful Haft Seen was on display. A special exhibit was open to guests with highlights of the Arts of Iran from the museum and the 'Emperor's Carpet.'

Guests were ushered to the Temple of Dendur, where Mr. Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani opened the evening with a warm speech. Mr. Mossavar-Rahmani is on the Steering Committee for the Noruz at the Met event and is the chairman of Mondoil Corporation, a private company active in international oil and gas exploration and production, focusing on West Africa. His wife Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani is a managing director at Goldman Sachs. The two recently donated $15 million to the Kennedy School at Harvard, the, to assist the School in research, scholarship and teaching where government meets business.  Mr. Mossavar-Rahmani thanked the audience and was followed by the president of the Metropolitan, Ms. Emily Rafferty.

The evening continued with a delicious array of Persian foods. The first course was Nan-o Panir- o Sabzi (bread cheese and herb roll), Dolmeye Barg-e Mo (stuffed grape leaves), Kuku-ye Sabzi (Herb patties), Shami-ye Goosht (meat and split pea patties), Mast-o Khiar (Yogurt, Cucumber and Mint Dip, Garnished with Rose Petals). The entrée was Boneless Veal Osso Buco, Baghali Polo (Green Rice with Dill and Fava Beans), Shirin Polo ba Morgh (Rice with Chicken, Orange Rind, Carrots, Almonds and Pistachios). Dessert was a trio of Persian Sorbets and Ice Creams consisting of Pistachio, Saffron, Rosewater, and Pomegranate.

The entertainment for the evening was provided by our very own Maz Jobrani, who had the audience roaring in a matter of minutes. Other notable guests included Farah Diba, Rudi Bakhtiar, Dr. Ehsan Yarshatar, Shirley Elghanian, Dr. and Mrs. Akhami, Mr. and Mrs. James de Givenchy, Leila and Henry Heller, Jimmy Finkelstein and Pamela Gross, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leighton, Dr. Patrick Stubgen and Dana Hammond Stubgen, Frederic Fekkai

and his wife Shirin, Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill and her father the Duke of Marlborough. What a fantastic event to ring in the New Year! We hope we can have many more Norooz celebrations at the Met.
