> > TV'S HISTORY CHANNEL PRAISED FOR PRUDENT OBJECTIVITY ON IRAN BY PIROUZ AZADI
Reflection on a recent [pseudo-]documentary on Iran

In a bold move, the TV History Channel in the U.S. canceled a so called fictional documentary called, “IRAN: The next Iraq?” scheduled for broadcast on February 9.  Watching the trailers on the program, the History Channel had referred to Iran as 'perhaps the most clear and present danger to American security' and had promised to 'examine evidence that shows Iran is secretly pursuing a nuclear weapon and just may intend to use it on the United States or its allies”. Critiques, however, contended that none of such allegations were convincingly tackled in this program that were based on objective evidence and proof, but rather, relying heavily on animations and sensational “tabloid” like journalism that is the practice of other news [show] channels such as FOX. They further concluded that if put on the air, this is yet another politically charged ploy to beat the drum of, and fan the fire for yet another unilateral war of aggression imposed on Iran in a region that is already a burning inferno.

Although the History Channel management, its subsidiaries and corporate supporters received a large number of email, fax, letters and phone calls from across the nation, a considerable number of such protests were from the historian scholars and experts of southwest Asia, albeit Iran as well as representatives from the Iranian-American community of nearly a million strong in the U.S. The History Channel, upon its last minute bold decision to pull the plug on the cited program, then received immense number of appreciative correspondences by its long time supporters reaffirming their continued patronage of the broadcasting channel. The scholars further offered their assistance to the Channel for future production of such programs to ensure they remain factually balanced.

The Iranian-American community is recognized by independent demographers and the U.S. Census as one of the most educated and affluent recent immigrant communities of the late 20’s century. They have immensely contributed toward the advancement of the American ideals and quality of life for all, in all walks of life including higher education, business and trade, law and broadcasting, art and entertainment, government and community endeavors, etc.  As they watch the continued quagmire in the vicinity to their homeland, they increasingly find themselves in a dichotomy in that, they spouse to see in Iran an independent, home grown democracy that is achieved through the educational and cultural reforms and the rule of law leading to the empowerment of all 70 millions Iranians-that have struggled for freedom, security and justice for the past nearly two hundred years. By the same token and after having witnessed the lingering disastrous dilemma in Afghanistan and Iraq where over three thousands Americans and hundreds of thousands of the natives are killed and or inured leading to an unprecedented economic loss estimated in the trillions of dollars, a military intervention is the last predicament they wish to ask for their homeland as they believe it leads to “throwing the baby and the bath out.”  In fact, many are on the strong opinion that by the current rhetoric and pre-emptive unilateral gestures by the current U.S. administration (e.g. Iranian nation labeled as the axis of evil by President Bush) that the slow pace of socio-political democratic reform in Iran that had commenced since the early 90’s has now led to the entrenchment of the far more radical political forces to power in that country. They further support such assertion by highlighting the struggle for freedom in their homeland to have convened nearly two hundred years ago; that then led to the establishment of the modern constitutional monarchy of 1906, where American freedom fighters and scholars as exemplified by Joseph Baskerville, Morgan Shuster and more recently Arthur Pope were at its forefront truly helping the democracy. It is no surprise that such American icons are revered by the Iranian populace as their own cultural saints through their poetic literature and history.

Some contemporary historians reiterate the fact that Iranians have and continue to revere the Americans and their unique way of lives, as evidenced, for instance, by the spontaneous expression of solidarity and candle vigils by massive congregations  of Iranians in Tehran and mother major Iranian cities after the U.S. was stricken by the despicable terrorist act of September 11.

Congruent with the majority of the U.S. population and as evidenced by the many independent polls, and consistent with the opinion of scholars and experts, the consensus in the Iranian American community leads one to conclude that they envisage the comprehensive political solution to the region, spanning from India to Israel, to be anchored on in-house educational and cultural reforms on the one hand, and the multi-lateral resolution of long standing grievances of the peoples of this region, on the other. This will be the only way, they reckon, when the empowerment of the people will isolate the radical forces.
