I was lucky enough to visit my parents and family in Iran over the winter break. As always I found Tehran to be overpopulated, polluted and impossible to navigate. The only saving grace was the snow and the beautiful mountains. Naturally we ended up traveling around the country.
Our trip this year took us to Kish and Mashhad, where we visited modern marvels such as the Darioush Grand Hotel in Kish as well as old school charm in the form of a fantastic tea house in Mashhad named Hezardastan.
There was one thing among all of this which will always be the highlight of my trip and that is having my Khaleh Shaheen's cooking with close family. This year, my Khaleh was really tired so she ended up catering the event, which is now a lot more common in Tehran than when we were kids. Khaleh's mehmooni was a small one consisting of only close family, so the food she ordered was for about twenty people.

The mehmooni menu consisted of plenty of chai to start the evening. Then we nibbled on noon-o-paneer-o-sabzi. With that, other appetizers like Salad Olivieh and Dolmeh made their appearance. Main dishes included Fesenjoon, Khoroshteh Bademjoon, Joojeh Kabab, Kabab-eh Koobideh, and Baghalee Polo. I know I requested Ghormeh Sabzi in there somewhere and I didn't see it. Maybe that's because my mom had made some the night before and everyone seems to keep track of our diets when we are there.
To top off the evening, we had lots of choices between fresh fruits, nuts and pistachios, fresh watermelon and kharbozeh, and ice-cream cakes, jello, and more tea.
